E\u00c7A DE QUEIR\u00d3S (1845-1900)<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The writer E\u00e7a de Queir\u00f3s was a friend of the count of Ficalho<\/a>, a member alongside him and other Portuguese writers and historians such as Oliveira Martins and Ramalho Ortig\u00e3o of the group of intellectuals called Vencidos da Vida (in English, \u201cdefeated of life\u201d). In 1898, on a trip to Alentejo, E\u00e7a de Queir\u00f3s visited the Pal\u00e1cio Ficalho, a visit he describes in a letter to his wife Em\u00edlia de Castro as follows:<\/p>

\u201cIt was very nice. To go to [the farm] Corte Condessa it was in my plan to sleep in Serpa \u2014 and the good Ficalho [count of Ficalho<\/a>], with a trait that, in such a great egoist, impressed me and has impressed all our friends, abandoned the delights of the centenary, and came with me to Serpa, to do me the honours of his house.”<\/p>

(…) “Lovely day. Serpa, beautifully picturesque town. Solar Ficalho with great air, weapons room, high terrace dominating the entire region, walls, etc. Everything a little abandoned \u2014 but comfortable, and even with art furniture!\u201d.<\/p>

The two friends could not have guessed that their families would be united through the marriage <\/a>of Ant\u00f3nio Martim de Mello (grandson of the count of Ficalho) to Maria das Dores E\u00e7a de Queir\u00f3s (granddaughter of E\u00e7a de Queir\u00f3s). This family connection explains the important presence in the house of works by\/about E\u00e7a de Queir\u00f3s and of several photographs remembering him<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
